Kupot Cholim (HMOs)
The four health funds in Israel (Meuchedet, Maccabi, Clalit, and Leumit) have branches throughout the country, including most large cities and districts. Differences between the health funds mainly revolve around facility locations, supplemental policies, and additional services offered. Some doctors work as independent contractors (Atzma’im). If you are a US citizen and plan to work as an independent contractor, please be in touch with a US CPA to ensure things are being completed correctly.
Hospitals
There are both private and public hospitals located throughout the country. Your specialty may be in particular demand – be in touch with med_aliyah@moia.gov.il to discuss leveraging this further.
Many physicians combine working in the Kupot Cholim with working in a hospital for supplemental income or hours flexibility. For a list of Israeli hospitals, click here.
Urgent Care Clinics
Terem and Briuta have networks of urgent and immediate care clinics. Both of these facilities are a great option for employment if you’ve already made Aliyah but haven’t yet started Hatama or don’t plan on applying for specialty recognition in Israel.
Private Practices
Anyone who holds a medical license is entitled to open a private practice. If you’re considering opening a private practice in Israel, we highly recommend discussing this option with people who have already done so to get a bigger picture idea as to what it entails. We encourage those who want to open a private practice to consider also working in the public sector in some capacity.
If you are a US citizen, PLEASE discuss this option with a US CPA as well, as there are tax implications to owning a private practice outside of the US. Here’s a list of US CPAs who have been helpful to other Olim in these scenarios.
Working Abroad
There are some fields that lend themselves to tele-health, and certain countries have a well developed tele-medicine system. If you plan to make Aliyah but would like to retain some/all of your work via tele-medicine, please confer with your CPA and insurance provider regarding the tax and insurance aspects to this choice. Please note, you’re also responsible to maintain your foreign medical license in order to legally work.
The Israel Medical Association’s role as a resource
The IMA is the representative organization of Israel’s physicians. Besides serving as a trade union fighting for optimal compensation and working conditions, the IMA shapes health policy in Israel and provides its members with a variety of services including a consumer club, courses, a membership card with a variety of benefits, professional journals, legal counsel, and more. A list of benefits can be found here.
